11 year old Martha Topp reviews a new title -Fairy Tales for the Fearless: Rabunzel by Gareth P. Jones illustrated by Loretta Schauer
Gareth P Jones is a Blue Peter award winning author and performer and this book is published by Farshore and a first in a series of retelling fairy tales. This story is based off Rapunzel the Disney fairy tale but includes little differences – for example all the characters are animals and Rapunzel is now Rabunzel and is a rabbit. The plot sees Rabunzel’s Mother lock her up in a hole in a tree and we get to see if she is rescued and allowed out to play again and find love. The perfect fairy tale.
The names of the characters are: Rabunzel, Rabunzel’s Mother and Flash Harry. There are additional characters like the beasts from the forest and Rabunzel’s friends but the book doesn’t give much description about them. I think my favourite character is Rabunzel because she uses the time stuck in the tree wisely and learns karate to fight off the bad guys.
I found the book enjoyable and liked the way they twisted the tale from being a human princess to a rabbit warrior. Overall this book is great for 3-5 years old and I think I would recommend this book to my little cousin Casey because she loves fairy tales!
